Samarkand [6.-8.Oktober]

Bye bye mountains, scenic landscapes and adventurous roads, hello Silk Road cities and deserts. Again the crossing from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan was smooth with the Uzbeks being more curious than thorough when checking our car. Just a few kilometers after the border we rolled into Samarkand, a lively city with impressively restored mosques, tombs and medressen (Islamic schools) dating back hundreds of years. A photographers paradise. Since the 1970s Uzbekistan has been cleverly marketing their Silk Road heritage, so there was not only an abundance of sights but also of tourists.
