From Karakol to Song Köl [11-20 August]

After the border we headed straight to Karakol, a regional center and a tourist spot for treks into the nearby mountains. The multitude of tourists and backpackers in August in Karakol clearly showed that some parts in Kyrgyzstan have become a main holiday destination in summer, unlike Kazakhstan or the Russian Altai. We didn’t linger long and headed for Bishkek to arrange our visas for Iran and Turkmenistan. Bishkek is a busy and rather polluted city and we were glad to leave the hustle and bustle after three days.

Towards lake Son Köl we crossed two mountain passes and spent the nights in valleys and gorges.
